Dear Movie Producers

If there already exists a multipart miniseries that is widely considered to be the DEFINITIVELY EXCELLENT  (or excellently definitive) film version of a book, please do not bother making a flimsy 2 hour movie about the same book.  It didn’t work for Pride and Prejudice and it’s not going to work for Brideshead Revisited.

I love Emma Thomspon, but for me, Claire Bloom is the only Lady Marchmain.

Last night I dreamt that I was at a party with many famous actors, Emma Thompson among them. I was trying to get her to adopt me, and the comparison to Claire Bloom above was a sticking point. Emma asked me to justify my comments and I found myself comparing Bloom’s performance to a sterling silver nail scissors: “Bloom’s Lady Marchmain is elegant, petite, and refined, but also hard, shiny, and dangerous. Her clipped civilities cut as effectively as a tiny blade. Other people don’t notice it at the time, but after one of her polite conversations, they find themselves bleeding from a thousand little wounds.”
